UNC Charlotte students will soon be enjoying discounts from all across the University area, thanks to their 49er ID Card and the Student Government Association.

SGA has partnered with the Student Savings Club, a group which encourages businesses to offer students discounts on services when shown a valid student id card, in this case, a 49er ID Card. Kelly Sheets, college of arts and sciences senator and vice chair of the senate food service committee, said the list of businesses SGA wishes to have included in the program have been sent to Student Savings Club representatives, and the program is now in their hands to complete.

"I think the most important aspect of this program is its ability to help build unity in our community," Sheets said. "Some times around here, it's not even like you are in college. We just don't have that college atmosphere. This should help. Plus, who doesn't want to save money?"

Student Savings Club is responsible for pushing businesses to offer student discounts. Once signed on with the program, businesses will put a Student Savings Club sticker in their window, alerting all with a 49er ID Card they are involved. Students can then go to the Student Savings Club Website, http://www.studentsavingsclub.com/, and print out a 'Pocket Guide' of businesses included and the discounts offered. UNCC had not been added to the website at time of press.

"Where ever a sticker outside a participating vendor's establishment is displayed, pull out your 49er Card," Ben Comstock, student body president, said. "I am originally from Ames, Iowa, a college town, with lots of discounts that the business community partakes in. I would like to bring the discounts to the UNC Charlotte community so that the business community and UNC Charlotte can engage with one another."

This program is not in conjunction with another program and does not have anything to do with UNCC's tuition or student fees. There are no sign up charges and is a safe way for student to make discounted purchases. The revenue received goes to the businesses and the discounted component is for students to take full advantage of. UNCC will be the first North Carolina school involved in the program. Over 175 other universities are involved.

A list of businesses to be included in the program was not available at time of press. NinerOnline will post those businesses as soon as they become available.
