The ISU community will soon have the opportunity to receive a discount card that will offer savings from local businesses pending approval of the Student Government Association Senate. The Student Savings Club card will be available in the middle of this fall. The card will be good for one year and new cards will be available annually. Hillary Davidson, SGA so-chair of community relations and president pro-tem of the Senate, said the free discount card will be available for students, faculty and staff. "The card is free, it's the point we want to stress," Davidson said. "It's like a high school booster club card, but without the selling part." "The goal of the program is to give students, faculty and staff a free discount card for them to use," Davidson said. "Students will get discounts and the businesses will get more business. It's a win-win situation." Students are encouraged to voice their opinion to help expand the list of local businesses. "We want to bring more business to the community," Davidson said. Student Savings Club will contact the local business to participate in the discount. "If some businesses don't do it the first year, they will usually sign up the second year," Davidson said. Businesses that participate will receive a decal and a letter for participation in the program to hang up in their store. Davidson said the program has worked well at other schools. Student Savings Club has been in business for 11 years. The bill will be proposed at the Senate's next meeting on Sept. 12. ISU would be the first school in Indiana to offer this program and there are currently 30 potential businesses on the list. "If there are recommendations, students can bring them to the SGA office," Davidson said. "Students decide what's on the card." "This is for students, we want to make their opinion heard. We don't want to leave out a business they want," Davidson said. Former SGA president Megan McManama contacted the Student Savings Club to lay the groundwork for the program and the 43rd administration of SGA will start the program, Davidson said. The discount card will be orange. "It was not logical to go with blue and white since the card is available at over 600 schools across the U.S.," Davidson said.
